The New York Giants are desperate for a quarterback.
Last season, they ended up cutting Daniel Jones halfway through the season, opting to finish the year with Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock. Moving on from Jones was inevitable, but the move was done earlier out of respect for Jones' wishes.
That put them in a tough spot this year when it comes to the future of the position. Now, they did sign Russell Wilson as a one-year stopgap and Jameis Winston to a two-year contract for more stability.
Giants NFL Draft QB scouting raises red flags
It's been very well known that the Giants are a team that needs a quarterback. Not only that, but they are picking third overall, meaning they will likely have the ability to take any quarterback not named Cam Ward.
Over the last couple of weeks, there have been a lot of discussions about whether or not the quarterbacks in this class are going to be worth the pick. The latest bit of information comes about Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, who says that he's struggling to find a team that ranks him as a first-round pick.
I’m having a really hard time finding coaches or scouts who believe Sanders is a first-round talent. This, by the way, is separate from any issue anyone has with his personality. Those questions exist, but lots of teams have made exceptions in that department in the past to take on guys with special talents.
The problem seems to be that too many folks don’t think Sanders has those types of gifts.
What I keep hearing—and this has nothing to do with anyone having some personal issue with Sanders, or looking for him to fall in the draft so they can draft him—is that he isn’t a great athlete on tape, doesn’t have exceptional arm talent, and too often does things that simply won’t translate to the NFL game.
That itself is a very interesting point, especially since he's been in the conversation to go in the top 10 for the last 4-5 months. He is the latest quarterback to have a private workout scheduled with the Giants, with Alabama's Jalen Milroe and Louisville's Tyler Shough also having workouts.
That raises somewhat of a red flag, as these workouts being scheduled this close to the NFL Draft bring a lot of questions. Former general manager and ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum made a comment that says a lot about the Giants' draft process.
Being that Tannenbaum has been around the block as a general manager for two organizations, his saying this has some credence. If they still have this much disagreement, it speaks volumes about the dysfunction in the organization, especially since many thought that ownership would move on from both general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
Now, it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. Continuing to gather information about the most important position in the National Football League is never a bad thing. That's especially true with a player like Milroe, who has every tool imaginable, but the lack of consistency is alarming.
Whatever the Giants end up doing at quarterback, they need to ensure it's the right choice, as it's been a revolving door at the position since the retirement of Eli Manning.
